Xitron has announced an important expansion of its K2 workflow family with the introduction of K2D-X, a new workflow solution designed specifically for digital print production, alongside K2 3.0, the latest generation of its production workflow platform.

For printers running multiple digital presses, one of the biggest workflow challenges is that each press may come with its own Digital Front End (DFE). As those environments grow, prepress can become a collection of separate production islands — each with different procedures and operator touchpoints.

Why it matters: Prepare jobs once, standardize prepress upstream, and continue using the native DFE that drives each press.

One Prepress Workflow, Multiple Digital Presses

K2D-X addresses the multi-DFE problem by moving common prepress functions upstream of the individual press DFEs. Incoming PDF files can be preflighted, corrected, normalized, and imposed once, then delivered as press-ready PDFs to the appropriate manufacturer's DFE.

That allows a shop to keep the native DFE it already knows and relies on, while creating a more standardized way to prepare work across several digital presses. For mixed-vendor digital environments, that can reduce duplicate setup and make operator procedures more consistent.

K2 3.0 Adds More Automation

Alongside K2D-X, Xitron is introducing K2 3.0, with expanded workflow automation, enhanced job management, streamlined deployment, and improved third-party integration. The practical goal is to reduce manual intervention while increasing production flexibility.

For commercial printers operating a combination of offset, digital, and hybrid production, K2 continues to offer a way to bring more of those processes under a common workflow — without forcing the plant into a single press manufacturer's ecosystem.

As print production environments become increasingly diverse, the ability to create a consistent, predictable workflow independent of the press manufacturer becomes more valuable. K2D-X is particularly interesting because it doesn't require a printer to abandon the DFEs and equipment already in place. Instead, it adds a common prepress layer that can standardize how jobs are prepared before they ever reach the press.
