THE BASICS

What G7 actually is

G7 is the industry-standard methodology for predictable, repeatable color across any printing process. Rather than chasing individual colors, G7 calibrates a system to a shared neutral foundation — gray balance and a defined tone curve.

Get the grays right, and the rest of the color falls into line, so different presses and proofers can produce a close visual match: proof to print, and printer to printer.

G7 & GRACoL

How G7 and GRACoL fit together

These terms get used interchangeably, but they're a pair: one is the target, the other is the method.

THE TARGET

GRACoL

A reference print condition for commercial offset that defines what "correct" color should look like — the aim you're printing toward.

THE METHOD

G7

The calibration process that brings your presses and proofers into alignment with that target. "G7 qualified to GRACoL" means you used G7 to hit the GRACoL aims.

WHY QUALIFY

What G7 qualification does for your shop

Consistent color across every device and location — and a match to other G7 shops, which national buyers increasingly require.

Fewer remakes and less waste — know what you'll get on press before you get there.

Shorter make-readies from calibrated, characterized presses and proofers.

Win color-critical work — third-party verification buyers and brands trust.

THE PROGRAM

The three levels of G7 Master Qualification

We'll help you target the level that fits your work.

FUNDAMENTAL

G7 Grayscale

Aligns your neutrals (CMY gray balance) to the G7 tone curves. The right starting point for solid, consistent grayscale.

ADVANCED

G7 Colorspace

Matches the entire reference print condition for the tightest tolerances — the level typically expected for contract proofing.

FAQ

G7 qualification, answered

G7 qualification (officially G7 Master Qualification) is an Idealliance certification confirming that a printing facility has calibrated its equipment to the G7 methodology — producing neutral, gray-balanced, repeatable color that's verified by a third party.
G7 is the calibration method; GRACoL is the target. GRACoL is a reference print condition for commercial offset that defines the color aim, and G7 is the process you use to calibrate your presses and proofers to hit it. A shop that's "G7 qualified to GRACoL" has done exactly that.
G7 Master Qualification is valid for one calendar year and must be renewed annually to stay current. We set up the process controls and schedule that keep you compliant year to year.
Yes — qualification requires calibration data approved by a certified G7 expert. You can work with our expert directly, or we can train one of your team members toward becoming a G7 Professional, so you can manage more of the process in-house over time.
It depends on how color-critical your work is. Grayscale is the foundation, Targeted adds matching for your key solid colors, and Colorspace is the most stringent — typically expected for contract proofing. We'll assess your shop and recommend the right level.
